Do I Need A Bone Graft?

February 26, 2022 0

To successfully place a dental implant into the jaw, you need to have enough bone to secure the dental implant. If you do not have enough bone, then you will need a bone graft. Your dentist will look at your bone structure and determine whether or not you require a bone graft using a 3D CT scan.

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft is a surgical procedure used to fill spaces in your mouth caused by bone loss. The procedure can strengthen your jawbone by placing bone graft materials to the area where there isn’t enough bone. It’s performed when you don’t have enough natural bone to secure the implant in place.

Reasons you may need a bone graft

There are a variety of reasons why you may not have enough bone volume. They can include:

Periodontal disease: Gum disease can break down the tissue in your gums and jawbone, causing your teeth to become loose.

Tooth Infection: A tooth infection can cause the jawbone structure to deteriorate if left untreated.

Tooth loss: A missing tooth will have an impact on the nearby teeth and jawbone. It can weaken the jawbone bone and cause atrophy.

Injury and trauma: Trauma from an accident or injury to the face and mouth can cause bone degeneration.

Malocclusion: A malocclusion (misaligned teeth) can cause bone loss over time. When teeth are out of place, bone stimulation can gradually decline if the teeth do not become aligned. A bone graft can ensure there is enough support for the teeth once they become aligned again.
